Citroen Basalt Launches in India: Unbeatable Introductory Price
Citroen has officially launched the Basalt coupe-SUV in India with an introductory price of Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India), available for bookings made before October 31. This new model is the fourth to emerge from Citroen’s C-Cubed programme for India and aims to shake up the midsize SUV segment, directly competing with the Tata Curvv.
Pricing Strategy: Basalt Undercuts the Competition
Though Citroen has only revealed the Basalt’s starting price, it’s already making waves by being at least Rs 1 lakh cheaper than its rivals. The full pricing details are expected soon.
Design Highlights: A Fresh Take on the Coupe-SUV
Built on the C3 Aircross platform, the Basalt features a distinct design with a sloping roofline, unique alloy wheels, revamped LED tail lamps, and a bold dual-tone rear bumper. Customers can choose from five monotone colors—Polar White, Steel Grey, Platinum Grey, Cosmo Blue, and Garnet Red— with the latter two options available with a contrasting black roof.
Interior Innovation: Comfort Meets Practicality
Inside, the Basalt mirrors the C3 Aircross’s dashboard but introduces contoured rear headrests and a segment-first adjustable thigh support for the rear seats. The SUV also boasts a sizable 470-litre boot, offering plenty of space for cargo.
Tech and Safety: Packed with Features
The Basalt comes loaded with modern amenities, including a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, and rear AC vents. On the safety front, it’s equipped with six airbags, electronic stability control, a rear parking camera, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Engine Options: Performance Tailored to Your Needs
Under the hood, the Basalt offers two 1.2-litre petrol engine options. The 82hp naturally aspirated engine delivers 115Nm of torque, while the 110hp turbo-petrol engine comes with a choice between a 6-speed manual (producing 190Nm) and a 6-speed torque converter automatic (delivering 205Nm). The naturally aspirated engine is paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Market Position: A Strong Contender
Citroen’s Basalt will be competing with some well-established names in the segment, such as the Tata Curvv, Hyundai Creta (Rs 11 lakh), Kia Seltos (Rs 10.90 lakh), Honda Elevate (Rs 11.69 lakh), Maruti Grand Vitara (Rs 10.99 lakh), Toyota Hyryder (Rs 11.14 lakh), Skoda Kushaq (Rs 10.89 lakh), Volkswagen Taigun (Rs 11.70 lakh), and the MG Astor (Rs 9.98 lakh). Its aggressive pricing strategy gives it a competitive edge in this crowded market.
